Thyroid optimization is for those individuals who are receiving thyroid replacement but are still not feeling quite right or for individuals who have many of the symptoms of a slow thyroid but their lab results may be in the "normal range". Having your thyroid levels in an optimal range have been shown to reduce the risk of a heart attack, help with weight loss, and lower cholesterol levels.
If the thyroid is not in balance, you may have symptoms even if your blood tests are in the normal range. In recognition of this, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists recommends that the normal range for the TSH test be changed to 0.3 up to 3.04 mIU/L.
The following are symptoms of a slow thyroid: low energy, fatigue, depression, weight gain, cold hands and feet, slowness of thought, puffy facial swelling, fluid retention, dry skin, brittle nails, constipation, irregular menstrual cycles and fertility problems.
A trial of supplementation of thyroid hormones may be prescribed for individuals whose symptoms, physical signs, and/or blood tests indicate that they may have inadequate thyroid hormone effects for optimal health and quality of life. If you do not need the thyroid supplementation, you will feel worse instead of better when your levels are increased.
If you have Hashimoto's thyroiditis, you will need additional testing, evaluation, and self-care treatments. Furthermore, low dose naltrexone has been shown to help with many symptoms, lower your thyroid medication dosage and even stop thyroid medication supplementation altogether.
The cost is $250 for the initial visit and then $150 for follow-up visits every two months. This does not include the cost of the medication.
